Chair Message

Chair, Board of Directors

Dear fellow members, friends and colleagues

We are happy that we have successfully completed another year of growth and reaching new levels of achievement and success. This is important for all of us, and reflects on our resilience and ability to work towards a better future. These abilities are particularly important as we expand our global reach.

Let’s celebrate the 60th “birthday” of our credit union! It was on May 7, 1962 that the certificate of the Pan American Union Staff Federal Credit Union was approved by the Bureau of Federal Credit Unions, Social Security Administration, Department of Health, Education, and Welfare. Our 60th birthday represents new levels of growth and maturity as an institution. Some of the highlights that occurred along this path toward this birthday have been:

    • Incorporating new SEG-Selected Employer Groups – our ability to bring new organizations that are within our Field of Membership to our credit union – thus, allowing their staff to be members of OAS FCU. It’s our most significant source of growth.
    • You – our members! We are a very diverse group of people, residing in different countries, with diverse talents and with diversity of needs and interests…
    • eVoting – opening our elections to everyone worldwide brings a more equitable and participatory process where all members can vote for the volunteer elected positions, our Board of Directors and Credit Committee. Your votes help guide us.
    • Sensitivity to and ability to respond to members’ questions, need, and interests – both in the USA and those living abroad. Our ability to communicate better has been greatly enhanced by top-of-the-line technology and always hiring staff members that know more than one language – so that we can now assist you in English, Spanish, Portuguese, and French.
    • Our technology – secure and reliable online services for members, regular updates, and continual acquisition of new systems and the elements that protect our systems and our members.
    • Continual growth – we achieve growth in total assets each year. This speaks to our evolution as an organization, our inclusive ways of working and relating, and our future and global perspective.
    • Where we are now – our total assets at the end of April 2022 are about US$300M and this means we continue to be in the large credit union category. Our products and services continue to evolve as we expand our global reach.
    • Embracing issues of importance for the members and our planet – last year we cohosted the 4th UIS – United in Sustainability Summit, which brought together over 100 credit union professionals and related industry representatives to promote the adoption of sustainability into the Credit Union business model.
    • Embracing change – we’re forming a “Green Committee” – co-chaired and composed of both volunteers and staff. We plan on developing new programs and products that will allow you to live a “greener” life. We will, also, continue green practices in our operations of the credit union. We have already started partnering with other credit unions to promote environmental and green awareness.

How about saving some trees? While we are committing to green, sustainable development we need to remember that the planet badly needs its trees. This is the reason why OAS FCU continues its efforts to go as paperless as possible. You can help, too: sign up for electronic statements for your OAS FCU accounts, including your credit cards and CUMA mortgages! Help us keep more trees planted!

All these exciting new developments are possible because of the dedicated staff of OAS FCU. Day in and day out they allow the credit union to continue providing and improving our services, and attend to members needs while working remotely through the covid-19 global pandemic. We hope that soon we will be able to see more of them in the branches, as we hope to be working in a hybrid manner as we transition back to a more in-person work system. Thank you – all the employees of OAS FCU for your commitment, friendliness, hard work, and smiles!

We are so proud of our volunteers! They are so dedicated and engaged with the credit union that they continue to participate in weekly (Credit Committee) and monthly meetings online. They discussed and provided input to many initiatives of the different Committees and Board. They collaborated in other initiatives of our credit union as well. They have worked very hard for you and we especially commend them for continuing their enthusiasm while volunteering, even if online. Thank you!!

We want our members to continue experiencing successful financial relations with our credit union and thrive. We – volunteers and staff – will continue working on your behalf for a healthy and future-oriented global credit union.

Most sincerely,
